Streife translated from Norwegian means roam. The right to roam, also called the right of access, or everyman's right(“allemannsretten”) is a traditional right from ancient times, and since 1957 has also been a part of the Norwegian Outdoor Recreation Act. It ensures that everybody gets to experience nature, even on larger privately owned areas. In our travels to Norway, we learned of this law and loved the concept so much we brought it back with us to America. Yet we had no land to offer. So, we searched...and searched....and searched some more. Then we found what would become camp Streife. 20 acres of uncut timber growth forest, tucked in the hills of Rumford Maine. With a nearby brook, pond and within 20 minutes of some of our favorite ski locations it was just right. The rules of this law are simple. Be considerate and thoughtful. Don't damage nature and other surroundings. Leave the landscape as you would want to find it. Leave no trace. You may put up a tent, or sleep under the stars, for the night anywhere in the countryside, forests or mountains, as long as you keep at least 500 feet away from the nearest inhabited house or cabin. This rule of 500 feet distance also applies to camping cars and caravans. If you want to stay for more than two nights in the same place, you must ask the landowner's permission, except in the mountains or very remote areas. Well, we've taken care of all those Allemannsretten rules for you. We invite you to our small part of the world and encourage you to exercise your right to roam. You, me, n the dogs

This site was exactly what we were looking for: our own spot in the middle of nowhere! The site was nice and private so we could have our dogs off leash and not worry about them bothering other people like at a campground. We only saw one vehicle on the camp road during our entire stay and the large padlocked gate at the road’s entrance was definitely added security. The tent platform was a great amenity and we didn’t have to worry about bringing a folding table because a picnic table was there as well. The pond was beautiful, as was the walk to get there. The foliage and flowers attracted many butterflies to the site but aside from that we didn’t see much wildlife. The hosts were very responsive and helpful before and during the stay. We would definitely camp here again and would recommend the spot to anyone who’s looking to rough it in private!

Had a great experience with total isolation. Loved the platform for the tent. The pond was a little murky for our liking to swim in but a 15 minute drive down to greenwood was a perfect little drive to the lake and check out neighboring towns. Overall very pleased

The platform is flat and level. The place felt really secure when I would leave my base camp for the day. The on site road is rough. Just be prepared to deal with ticks as they seem to be endemic. I removed a couple from my pants, one from the table, one from the tent, one from my lower back and one from my hair.

Quiet, but buggy.

Rough road getting to camp. I was in a lifted cross-over fitted for trail riding and was fine. Camp was buggy from all the rain. The platform was kinda in a bog. My pup-style tent had to be pitched off of the gravel parking area, not ideal but worked. Bring bug spray and bug deterrent candles / zappers...you get the idea.

Quiet retreat

My family loved camping at Adrian and Tara's tent site. We came in late at night, Tara was very responsive and helped navigate us to the site. We brought our dog, she was so happy to run off leash the entire stay! Definitely a great location, and we plan to come back again!

The site was beautiful and very secluded which is very nice when you want privacy to enjoy nature at its best. The clear sky at night was breathtaking and the spaced that was cleared so it was a nice attribute to the camp site. Our pups loved being outdoors and the brook was a nice little additive to the ups and downs when walking around. If you love the rural parts of camping then take full advantage of this camp site. The owners are super responsive and very caring to the concerns of their guests. They have very descriptive details to get in and out so we would get there safely especially since we arrived at nightfall. It does take an SUV or Truck made for off roofing do make sure to plan for it. Our SUV faired out ok and it was a fun adventure all around. But honestly it was truly a great experience for the books on our end!
